For writers, this can be a wonderful time to pause, reflect, and create.
You don’t have to force yourself to write something huge. Sometimes the best stories begin with a quiet question, a strange feeling, or a single image that refuses to leave.
So as August comes to a close, use these prompts to explore endings, beginnings, secrets, transformation, and the things your characters aren’t ready to let go of.

The full moon can be a beautiful fictional symbol for revelation. Something has reached its peak—and now something must change.
1. The Morning After
Your character wakes up the morning after a strange full-moon night.
Everything appears normal.
Except for one thing.
What has changed?
2. The Moon Revealed the Truth
Every full moon, the moonlight reveals something hidden.
This month, your character discovers the truth about someone they love.
What does the moon reveal?
3. Something Answered
Your character made a wish beneath the full moon.
They didn’t expect anything to happen.
The next morning, someone—or something—has answered.
4. The Light Is Fading
A character discovers that whatever appeared during the full moon is disappearing with the moonlight.
They have until dawn to decide whether to follow it.
5. The Secret That Couldn’t Stay Hidden
A secret has been successfully hidden for years.
But during the full moon, everyone in the room suddenly knows it.
Write the scene where your character realizes they have been exposed.

The end of August is also a natural moment to think about what needs to be left behind.

August can also represent a transition between seasons and states of mind.
Use that feeling in your fiction.
11. September Is Coming
Everyone in town is preparing for September.
Your character is preparing for something completely different.
They know what September will bring.
No one believes them.
12. The Last Summer Secret
A group of friends made a pact at the beginning of summer.
They promised never to tell anyone what happened.
On the final day of August, one of them breaks the promise.
13. The Calendar Changed
At midnight on August 31, your character’s calendar changes.
Instead of September 1, it displays a date that doesn’t exist.
Then someone knocks on the door.
14. The Thing Found Before September
While cleaning their home before the new month begins, your character discovers something hidden years ago.
A photograph.
A letter.
A key.
And a name they don’t recognize.
15. August Remembered
Your character discovers that August isn’t simply a month.
It remembers everything that happens during it.
And this August, it remembers something your character desperately wants forgotten.

The end of a month doesn’t have to be about endings.
It can also be the doorway into something new.
21. The First Day of a New Life
Your character wakes on September 1 and decides they are going to become a completely different person.
By breakfast, someone from their old life arrives.
22. A New Beginning With an Old Enemy
Your character has been given a chance to start over.
Unfortunately, their new beginning requires them to work with the person who ruined their old life.
23. The September Letter
A letter arrives on September 1.
It was written by someone who died years ago.
The final sentence says:
“You have until the end of September.”
24. The Stranger at the Beginning
Your character meets a stranger on the first day of September.
The stranger immediately says:
“You’re finally here.”
Your character has never seen them before.
25. What Happens Next?
Write the final scene of August as though it were the ending of one story.
Then write the first scene of September as though it were the beginning of another.
Now ask yourself:
Are they actually the same story?

Before August disappears, take ten minutes and finish these five sentences:
- This August, my character lost…
- This August, my character discovered…
- The full moon revealed…
- My character is leaving behind…
- When September begins, everything changes because…
Don’t worry about making the answers perfect.
You may discover a character.
You may discover a conflict.
You may discover a setting.
Or you may discover the beginning of your next story.
Sometimes a new story doesn’t arrive with a dramatic idea.
Sometimes it appears quietly, at the edge of one month and the beginning of another.
