Free Halloween Writing Prompt Sheet for Cozy Spooky Writers

Halloween is almost here, and the air feels thin in that lovely, eerie way. The candles are lit, the leaves are scratching at the windows, and stories seem to be waiting just outside the door.

To help you welcome them in, I made a little gift for you: a free Halloween writing prompt sheet you can print or keep on your screen through the spooky weekend.

What This Free Printable Is

It is a one-page sheet of Halloween writing prompts, gentle enough for a cozy evening and dark enough to give you a little shiver. Each prompt is a small spark you can turn into a scene, a poem, a journal entry, or the start of something bigger.

Who It Is For

This sheet is for writers who want to join in the Halloween fun without a big commitment. It is perfect if you have only a few minutes, if you are warming up before NaNoWriMo, or if you simply love writing by candlelight on the last nights of October.

A Few Sample Prompts

  • A trick-or-treater knocks on a door that has not opened in fifty years.
  • Your character finds a jack-o’-lantern on the porch carved with their own face.
  • The town witch hands out one special candy each year, and this year it is meant for you.

How to Use It

Pick one prompt and set a timer for ten or fifteen minutes. Let yourself write messy. You can also use the sheet as a writing date with a friend, a family storytelling game on Halloween night, or a warm-up before your November project begins. And on Halloween itself, my 31 Story Seeds post will be waiting with even more sparks.
