✍️ September 1 Writing Check-In: A New Month, A Fresh Page

September is here.

There’s something about the beginning of a new month that makes me want to pause, take a breath, and look at where I am—not just as a writer, but as a person trying to balance creativity with everything else life brings.

August had its ups and downs. Some days brought plenty of ideas and motivation, while other days required stepping back and giving myself grace.

And that’s okay.

Writing doesn’t always happen in neat, predictable ways.

Sometimes progress looks like writing 2,000 words.

Sometimes it looks like outlining a scene.

Sometimes it’s simply thinking about your characters while you’re doing something completely unrelated.

And sometimes, progress means resting.

🌙 Looking Back at August

August was a busy month here at Sara’s Writing Sanctuary.

I spent a lot of time creating writing resources, brainstorming new blog topics, and thinking about where I want the Sanctuary to go next.

I also continued working toward some bigger goals that I’ve been talking about for a while.

I’m still working on my email courses and my plans for offering creative writing coaching. These projects are taking time, but they haven’t been forgotten.

I’m also continuing to think about the future of the Sanctuary shop and what kinds of writing-related products I would eventually like to offer.

There are a lot of ideas.

There are also a lot of things happening behind the scenes.

So, as always, I’m reminding myself that everything doesn’t have to happen at once.

📖 Where Am I With My Writing?

September is a good time to ask a few simple questions:

  • What am I currently writing?
  • What story has been on my mind lately?
  • Did I make progress on my current project?
  • What stopped me from writing when I struggled?
  • What helped me get back into the story?
  • Is this still the story I want to work on?
  • What would make writing easier this month?

You don’t have to have impressive answers.

Maybe your answer is:

“I haven’t written much.”

That’s okay.

Maybe it’s:

“I’ve been thinking about my story constantly but haven’t gotten the words down.”

That’s okay too.

Or perhaps:

“I finally know where my story is going.”

That’s something worth celebrating.

Every stage of writing counts.

🍂 September Writing Goals

I’m trying not to approach September with a giant list of things I must accomplish.

Instead, I want to focus on realistic goals.

This month, I want to focus on:

Writing when I can.

Not forcing myself to meet an unrealistic schedule, but making room for my stories whenever possible.

Continuing to develop my stories.

Sometimes a story needs more planning before the actual drafting can happen.

Creating useful writing content.

I want to continue sharing writing advice, prompts, and ideas here for writers who need a little inspiration or encouragement.

Working on future Sanctuary projects.

The email courses, coaching ideas, and shop plans are still in progress.

They may take longer than I originally imagined, but they’re still part of the bigger picture.

📝 A September Check-In for You

If you’re a writer reading this, take a few minutes today to check in with yourself.

Ask:

What am I proud of from August?

It doesn’t have to be a completed manuscript.

Maybe you wrote one scene.

Maybe you created a character.

Maybe you finally figured out a plot problem.

Maybe you simply opened your writing document after avoiding it for weeks.

That counts.

What do I want from September?

Do you want to:

  • Start a new story?
  • Continue an existing project?
  • Finish a chapter?
  • Outline your novel?
  • Revise an old draft?
  • Write a few short stories?
  • Experiment with a new genre?
  • Simply get back into the habit of writing?

Choose something that feels possible.

What do I need to let go of?

This might be the most important question.

Maybe you need to let go of comparing your progress to another writer.

Maybe you need to stop feeling guilty about taking breaks.

Maybe you need to stop believing that every writing session has to produce something amazing.

Your writing journey is yours.

It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

🌻 Give Yourself Grace This September

One thing I want to carry into September is grace.

Life doesn’t always cooperate with our writing plans.

There will be unexpected responsibilities.

There will be difficult days.

There will be times when your brain simply doesn’t want to cooperate with the story you’ve been working on.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

Your story will still be there.

Your ideas will still be there.

You can come back.

And if you need to take a step back, take it.

Rest isn’t giving up.

✨ A September Writing Prompt

Let’s start the month with a little mystery.

Your character wakes up on September 1st and discovers a note beside their bed.

It contains only one sentence:

“You have until the end of this month to fix what you did.”

Who left the note?

What did your character do?

What happens if they fail?

And perhaps most importantly…

Does your character even remember doing it?

See where the story takes you.

🖤 Here’s to September

A new month doesn’t mean you have to reinvent yourself.

You don’t have to suddenly become the most productive writer you’ve ever been.

You don’t need a perfect writing routine.

You just need somewhere to begin.

So, if August didn’t go exactly how you wanted, that’s okay.

Turn the page.

September is waiting.

Write what you can. Rest when you need to. Keep your stories close. And give yourself grace along the way.

Welcome to September at Sara’s Writing Sanctuary. 🌙🖋️

Happy Writing ^_^
